As a professional wedding DJ, I know that the first dance is often the highlight of the evening – your first chance to slow down, embrace, and share a special moment as a newly married couple. Whether you’re excited about showing off a choreographed routine or simply hoping to sway naturally in each other’s arms, my goal is to make sure your first dance is perfect for you.
Choosing your first dance song
Picking the right song for your first dance can be as important as the dance itself. This song is a reflection of your story, your personality, and the love that brought you this moment. Here are some common ways couples approach selecting “their song”:
A song with special meaning
Maybe it’s the song that was playing the night you met, or a track that reminds you of a special memory together. A song that holds sentimental value often makes for an unforgettable first dance.
A romantic ballad
Many couples choose a classic love song that resonates with their feelings for each other. Romantic ballads like Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” or Etta James’ “At Last” can create a timeless moment.
Something light-hearted and fun
Don’t feel pressured to stick to tradition. If a quirky or humorous song better represents your personality, go for it! A light-hearted song can make your guests laugh and set a fun tone for the night.
Themed song choices
If you have a wedding theme, consider a song that complements it. Whether it’s something vintage, rustic or modern, your first dance can reflect the mood and style of your wedding day.

Timing your first dance: when should it happen?
Every wedding is unique and the timing of your first dance should suit the flow of your evening. There’s no “right time” but here are a few things to consider:
Setting the stage
Generally, the first dance is announced early on in the evening’s celebrations to create a smooth transition from dinner or the cocktail hour into the night’s dancing. This approach brings your guests together, sets a romantic mood, and lets everyone know it’s time to celebrate!
Post-dinner moment
Some couples choose to have the first dance after dinner as a transition to the evening’s festivities. It provides a natural break and allows guests to settle in before the dance floor opens up.
Keeping guests engaged
Whatever timing you choose, I’ll make sure that an announcement is made to gather your guests for this moment. This way, everyone can witness and celebrate this beautiful highlight of your day.

Making your first dance unforgettable
Whether you’re dancing to an upbeat number or a classic love ballad, your first dance should feel comfortable, relaxed and memorable. Here are a few tips:
Practice a little (or a lot!)
If you’re nervous about dancing in front of everyone, a little practice can go a long way. Even a few basic steps can give you confidence and help you feel more at ease.
Embrace your personal style
You don’t have to follow any rules with your first dance. If you’d rather keep it simple and natural, go for it! If a choreographed routine feels right, have fun with it. The goal is to feel like yourselves.
Enjoy the moment
The first dance is one of the rare moments of the day when you can slow down and just focus on each other. Breathe, take it all in and let the music and the moment carry you.
Alone or everyone
Your first dance as a married couple is all about you but it’s not uncommon to feel self-conscious or a little uncomfortable at the thought of everyone watching you dance for 4-5 minutes. If you want your guests to join you on the dance floor just let me know. I’ll listen to your chosen song and find a suitable point where I can invite all your guests to join you whilst still giving the photographer/videographer enough time to get their romantic shots of just the two of you.
Let’s make it a dance to remember!
Your first dance is more than just a tradition, it’s a symbol of your new journey together. I’m here to make sure that this moment is everything you want it to be. With the right song, the perfect timing and a little planning, we’ll create a first dance that’s uniquely you and memorable for everyone.
Let’s choose the song, plan the timing and set the stage for a night full of celebration, laughter and dancing that everyone will remember.
